“Love is an art, just as living is an art; if we want to learn how to love we must proceed in the same way we have to proceed if we want to learn any other art…it requires knowledge and effort.” – Erich Fromm

Couples Work:

Relationships are like flowers: they require regular watering and care in order to keep blooming. And every day, in each interaction with a loved one – consciously or not – we’re choosing whether to water a good seed or a bad seed in the relationship.

As a couples therapist, I view my role as creating a safe, non-judgemental space where we can attend to three key areas of your relationship:

1) Teaching you helpful skills to better manage conflict and cultivate compassion. I'll help you listen to one another better and break deeply entrenched patterns. Everyone yearns to be seen, heard, and appreciated by their partner, and I’ll guide you there by paying attention to your strengths and modeling ways to work through weaknesses. While conflict never fully disappears in a relationship, the goal is to reach a place where you have the tools to work through issues when they arise so that you can focus on the beautiful aspects of your relationship.

2) Exploring deeper, longer-term issues affecting the relationship. As in individual work, I believe that much of a couple’s current state is rooted in the relationship’s history and in the separate, but now intertwined histories of each member in the couple. Together, we’ll peer into your past to gain a more comprehensive understanding of how it’s affecting your dynamic so we can reach a healthier, happier equilibrium.

3) Flower-watering. Encouraging you to focus on the positive qualities of the relationship. We will remember what made you fall in love with one another and what keeps you loving one another. We’ll focus on what’s working and the improvements that you make through our work together. Maintaining a positive perspective is key to relationship happiness and fulfillment, so I won’t let the sessions slip into negativity all the time.
